What's next for Nest?
In a letter to employees obtained by The Verge, Nest's new CEO Marwan Fawaz hints at some new products coming soon. But the products were redacted from the version of the letter The Verge published.
We're told by sources familiar with Nest's product roadmap that those redacted products include new colors of the Nest thermostat and an outdoor version of the Nest Cam.
A Nest spokesperson declined to comment.
The Nest Cam is a web-connected camera that lets you stream live video from inside the home. It's the next evolution of the Dropcam, which was made by a company of the same name that Nest acquired in 2014.
However, it's not designed for outdoor use, even though many people put their Nest Cams outside anyway. In fact, third parties have made weatherproof cases for Nest Cams. The new outdoor Nest Cam will be more rugged and designed to withstand the elements. We're told that it looks "sleek" and that it'll come in white. It'll also have a power cord, which means you won't have to worry about batteries the way you do with competing outdoor webcams like Netgear's Arlo.
As for the new thermostat colors, we're told that the changes will be "tasteful" with accents along the trim.
Those might not be the groundbreaking products Nest watchers were hoping for, but we're also told the company is planning bigger things for 2017. Our sources declined to say what, exactly, Nest has planned for then, other than one will be an "obvious" home product.
When asked if it was a home security system, we were told, "that's a good guess" that "would make a lot of sense." So file that one under the rumor category for now.
