The Transport Guy: The way you use your iPhone is about to change forever

Let's do an experiment.

How many steps does it take for you to call an Uber from your iPhone?

For me it was:

1.) Power on my iPhone. 2.) Unlock my iPhone with TouchID. 3.) Tap the Uber app. 4.) Tap the address field and enter my location. 5.) Tap the other address field and enter my destination. 6.) Tap "Set pickup location." 7.) Tap to accept the surge charge. 8.) Tap "Request Uber X."

That's a lot of work for something so simple.

Luckily, it's going to change soon.

The new iPhone update, iOS 10, will let any developer integrate with Siri. So in Uber's case, instead of punching through seven or eight steps, you only have to one step: "Siri, call me an Uber."

Boom.

Now extend that to all the other apps you use. "Play my Spotify Discover Weekly playlist." or "When does Dark Sky think it's going to rain next?" or "Book a flight to San Francisco on Delta."

There are endless possibilities for developers to explore, and I'm willing to bet that a year from now many of you will be using Siri for one-off tasks more often than opening an individual app and poking around to find what you want.

It's not just a major update to Siri. It's the biggest update to how your iPhone works in years.

This also plays into a longer term strategy for Apple. Some of the smartest people in tech think voice control and artificial intelligence is the next major platform for our gadgets. Ideally, the interface will disappear for most things and you'll just tell your device what you want to happen. Allowing third-party apps to work with Siri is a major step forward to making that a reality. Down the road, you can see how useful such things are in the car or with automated appliances in the home.

But in the meantime, it's all about how you use the iPhone. And it's going to change in a big way.
